Solar battery storage, sized to your evenings

Solar battery storage keeps the surplus electricity your panels make during the day, so your home can use it in the evening and at night and buy less from the grid. We size every battery to how you use electricity and fit it with our own team across Devon and Cornwall, from our base near Okehampton.

Day into evening

How solar battery storage works through the day

Your panels generate while it’s light, and your home uses that electricity first. A battery keeps what’s left over for later: it doesn’t change how much your panels generate, only when you can use it. For the science behind the panels, read how solar panels turn daylight into electricity.

WhenThe panelsPower for your home comes from
Through the dayGenerate electricity, at reduced output on cloudy daysThe panels first, with any surplus charging the battery
Battery fullKeep generatingThe panels, with the surplus exported to the grid
EveningGenerate less as the light fadesThe battery, from electricity stored earlier
OvernightProduce no powerThe battery, then the grid once the battery is empty

The right system, not the biggest one.
Based on how you use electricity, that can mean putting the additional budget into battery capacity rather than more panels.

Sizing

What decides the right battery

Solar shouldn’t be sold from a price list. Every battery we recommend is designed around your property and the way you use electricity, and your quote shows the measurements that matter.

  • Capacity, in kWh

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) measures energy: how much electricity a battery can store, or a home uses. Capacity decides how far into the evening your stored solar lasts.

  • Power, in kW

A kilowatt (kW) measures power: the rate electricity flows at any moment. It decides how much the battery can run at once, such as an oven and a kettle together.

  • The panels that charge it

A solar array’s rated size is given in kWp, kilowatts peak. A battery can only store the surplus your panels make, so on a new solar panel installation we size the two together.

  • Backup, where it suits

Some systems can keep chosen circuits running in a power cut, when backup is included and the system is designed for it. Not every system can, and we’ll say plainly if yours will. If backup matters to you, tell us early, because it shapes the design.

  • Room to grow

The batteries we fit are modular, so capacity can often be added later if your use changes, for example when an electric vehicle charger becomes part of the system.

The makers we fit

Loyal to the right system, not to a box

Technology is selected around your property and your needs. Whichever we fit, the battery carries its maker’s own warranty, separate from our 10-year workmanship warranty, and all three makers can shorten their cover if a system doesn’t stay connected online.

  • Sigenergy

Our premium option. SigenStor brings the solar inverter, battery and energy management together in one modular, stackable system, and its battery packs are designed so that old and new can be mixed. The Sigenergy systems we install have their own page.

  • EcoFlow PowerOcean

A modular home battery system: start with one battery pack and add more later, with new packs working alongside the ones you already have. See the EcoFlow PowerOcean range.

  • Fox ESS

Hybrid inverters paired with modular batteries, where extra modules are added to the stack as needs grow. See the Fox ESS range we fit for the details.

Getting a quote

Start with a 15-minute call

A Battery Quote Request is a 15-minute phone call, at no charge. With your current electricity costs and a picture of how you use energy, we can design a battery-only system for you remotely. Request a battery quote call, or ring 07441 369 505. It helps to have to hand:

  • What you pay for electricity now. A recent bill is ideal.
  • When your household uses the most electricity, especially in the evening.
  • What your panels make, if you already have them, or the roof you’d put them on.
  • Any plans that will change your use, such as an electric vehicle charger as part of the system.
  • Where there might be room for the battery, such as a garage or utility room.
  • Whether backup power matters to you, so we can tell you if it’s included and suitable.

Already have solar?

A battery for the panels you have

Everything on this page applies to existing systems too, including ones we didn’t fit. We start with a look at how your current system is set up, then explain the route that suits it. Adding a battery to existing solar panels has its own page, with the options set out plainly.

Once it’s fitted, we show you how the battery works and how to follow it in the app. Every installation we carry out includes a year of The Solar Owners Club, with an annual system health check and a dedicated support line.

A battery is one way to buy less electricity from the grid, at home or on a farm with solar and storage. For the wider picture, read what you can do about rising energy bills.

Questions

Battery storage: your questions.

All our FAQs

We look at the space during the survey and agree a location with you. Depending on the model, the batteries we fit can be wall-mounted or floor-standing.

Yes, solar panels still generate electricity on cloudy days, though at reduced output. At night, they don’t produce power — but if you have battery storage, you can use stored energy generated during the day.

Not every system does. Backup power is possible where it’s included and suitable, and some systems can then keep chosen circuits running during a power cut. We’ll tell you plainly whether yours can, and which circuits it would cover.

It depends on how much electricity your household uses in the evening and overnight, and how much surplus your panels make. We size it from your bills and your daily routine rather than recommending the largest option. If a smaller battery is the right answer, that is what we’ll recommend.

No. The call takes a quarter of an hour, and there’s nothing to pay. We ask about your electricity costs and your daily use, and from that we can plan a battery-only system without a visit. If you’d rather we came to you, a site survey can be booked instead.
