Our home county

Devon

More than a third of the county, 35%, is National Park or National Landscape, from Dartmoor and Exmoor to its five National Landscapes, and inside Dartmoor National Park every planning decision rests with the Park’s own authority. So the rules for panels on your roof start with where you live.

Homes here are older and more often detached than England’s: over a fifth of the county council area’s properties (21.9%) predate 1900, against 14.9% in England, and at the 2021 Census 35.8% of households had a detached home (England 22.9%). Mains gas is scarcer too: an estimated 31.6% of homes in Devon’s eight districts were off it in 2024, against 15.6% across England.

23 towns on our map, the nearest 8 miles from Lewdown and the farthest 47. Solar panels in Devon covers the whole county.

Every part of the county

Cornwall

Our base sits 3.08 miles from the Cornish border, and the housing over it is older: more than a quarter of homes (27.3%) predate 1919, by the Valuation Office Agency’s count, against 19.9% for England. Planning has more to check in places, too, with 145 conservation areas and 12,664 listed buildings on Cornwall Council’s records.

Almost half the county’s homes (47.0%) were not on the gas grid in 2024, by government estimates, against 15.6% across England. Cornwall Council’s planning advice is that panels on a home often need no planning permission, and we check what applies at your address during the survey.

18 towns, from Launceston at 6 miles to Penzance at 68, as the crow flies. For the county as a whole, see Cornwall solar panels.
